Perched on a terrace along the right bank of the Krka River, northeast of the village of Gumberk, Struga Castle stands as one of the finest examples of 16th-century Renaissance castle architecture. Originally mentioned in 1449 as a manor, it was transformed into a castle in the 16th century by Karel pl. Jurič. The Jurič family remained the lords of the estate until the early 19th century, when ownership passed to the Knights of Fichtenau. After World War II, the castle became the property of the Krka Agricultural Cooperative.
The castle's structure reflects its history. The single-story residential wings enclose a central courtyard, while the eastern wing, with its two square defensive towers, highlights its strategic and protective function. Due to its prominent location along the Krka River, Struga Castle is regarded as one of the most significant cultural and environmental landmarks in the Dolenjska region, where nature and architecture blend in perfect harmony.
Beyond its architectural beauty, Struga Castle holds great cultural and historical significance, famously appearing in Ivan Tavčar’s novel "Otok in Struga", adding an air of mystique and romance to its legacy.
More than just a relic of the past, Struga Castle is an exceptional destination for history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and admirers of natural beauty, inviting visitors to uncover its remarkable story.

Perched dramatically on a steep cliff above the Krka River, Žužemberk Castle stands as one of Slovenia’s most picturesque and iconic medieval fortresses. With its imposing stone walls and centuries-old towers, this historic stronghold transports visitors back to a time of knights, feudal lords, and medieval legends.
A fascinating detail of the castle is the stone gate of its four-sided tower, which is said to bear the carved year 1000. This suggests that the fortress was likely commissioned by Wilhelm I, the husband of Saint Emma, who served as the frontier lord of the Savinja region. If true, this would make Žužemberk Castle one of the oldest fortifications in Slovenia.
Each year, the castle truly comes to life during the Market Days medieval fair, held as part of the municipal holiday celebrations on July 15th. Visitors can experience an authentic medieval atmosphere, with costumed performers, traditional crafts, and lively reenactments bringing history to life within the castle’s ancient walls.
Whether you visit for its history, breathtaking views, or the excitement of its medieval festivities, Žužemberk Castle promises an unforgettable journey into the past.
