Velika Planina - settlement of shepherds

The shepherd settlement is considered one of the few settlements of its size preserved in Europe, attracting numerous visitors throughout the year. It is recognized for its distinctive architecture, which has become a symbol of Velika Planina.

velika planina 1

The roofs of the cabins in Velika Planina are covered with distinctive spruce shingles that extend quite far down. In the Kamnik region, a shepherd's cabin is called a "shepherd's cabin" or simply a "cabin," and the spruce shingles are known locally as "šinkel."

However, the settlement at Velika Planina truly comes alive in June, when the huts fill with shepherds who remain in the pastures with their livestock until September. They will be delighted to invite you to sample delicious homemade dairy products or enjoy an authentic shepherd's snack: sour milk and žganci (made with buckwheat flour).

Kamnik - A Medieval City with History 🏰

Kamnik is a medieval town with a rich historical heritage. In the 15th century, the town was surrounded by walls between 3 and 10 meters high with a protective moat, and four gates provided access to its interior.

Today, Kamnik retains its medieval charm, with cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and an atmosphere that transports visitors back in time. An ideal destination for exploring Slovenia's medieval history and architecture! 🏰✨

Kamnik, a town nestled in the Kamnik-Savinje Alps, is considered one of Slovenia's most beautiful medieval towns. In its heyday, it was a thriving trading center and home to the Counts of Andes of Bavaria.

Its rich architectural heritage is a reminder of the time when Kamnik was the capital of Carniola, leaving an indelible mark on the region's history.

kamnik

On the city's hill, also known as the city's balcony, a castle complex existed as early as the 11th century. Of this, only the two-story Romanesque chapel with its crypt survives, and today it is one of the city's main symbols.

From this vantage point, there is a magnificent view of the city center and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.
