Activities

Hiša eksperimentov

Introducing Hiša eksperimentov

Have you ever rested on a fakir’s bed? Or created a whole new landscape and then watched nature run its course right before your eyes? When was the last time you put on a soap bubble, floated in midair, watched a dancing liquid or tried to attain equilibrium? Where on Earth can you listen to your own echo, reproduce with mirrors, watch vehicles running uphill and observe glowing fishes in the pitch dark ocean waters? Have you figured out what your frequency was, have you ever limped long-distance or watched the world through switched eyes? You can experience all this and much more in the Hiša eksperimentov.

The exhibits in the Hiša get their real value only when you touch them. By moving, changing, squeezing and playing you get to know something new every time.

The Hiša is science, being shown in an entertaining way, where the experiments are pieces of art. We try to show that the transition from art to science is soft, and the Hiša thrives in this transition space. The guidelines for the experiments are illustrated with a touch of humor. There’s a permanent exhibit of work by the Slovene caricaturist Božo Kos in the Hiša.

Walk in Tivoli park and Rožnik

Tivoli Park is the largest park in Ljubljana that connects the city centre and the wooden area of Rožnik and Šiška Hill. According to the plan, prepared in 1813 by the French engineer Blanchard, it was created from two parks once surrounding the Podturn Manor and Cekin Mansion. The park’s design is marked with three main promenades surrounded by wild chestnut tree avenues, complemented by individual flower parks, interesting trees, numerous statues and several fountains. There are more than 80 tree species in the park, many of which are exotic.

Tivoli Park is a typical city park and one of the most significant green areas in Ljubljana. It has an important function of connecting the meadow and forest areas outside the city to other urban greenery. Its history is very fascinating and more than two centuries long, just like the tradition of visits and walks in the park. For the city of Ljubljana and its surroundings, it has a symbolic meaning and it is well-known throughout Slovenia. With its extraordinary biodiversity, it is a habitat for rare and endangered species, mostly birds and the hermit beetle (Osmoderma eremita).

The park area has a status of a designed natural value of local importance, as well as a natural monument, one of the four protected areas in the landscape park.

Museum: Plečnik's house

He didn’t have a mule, but the house in Trnovo where he moved into in 1921 soon got a tower – a cylindrical annexe with two round rooms on two storeys. After having bought the neighbouring houses, Plečnik added a garden to his home and later also an original winter garden as devised by the architect who left his mark on Vienna, Prague and Ljubljana in the first half of the twentieth century. Among the more interesting rooms are his studio, with desks bearing numerous instruments, plans and models; the spartan-looking bathroom complete with ingenious wood-heated shower; the small reception room, where he would receive friends and colleagues (note the stove with its built-in copper kettle); and the kitchen, containing his special chair that enabled him to eat and work at the same time. Having browsed around the house, it's hard to reconcile such a modest man with the grand structures that have left such an indelible mark on this city.
